Reflections on Riding 
Looks like a TB polo pony? It may be my imagination, but have you ever noticed in a lot of the older photos the length of the horses hooves? They always seem way too long. Maybe it’s because Dini gets a barefoot mustang roll?

I was thinking saddlebred…so the hooves didn’t look quite as long! I do think that there’s been a change in shoeing styles through the years. It would be interesting to explore whether or not that’s true.
And then there’s the TB racing trim. I’m always amazed to look at the feet on horses being offered on the track.

Yes, could be a Saddlebred riding horse, since I see no polo equipment.I hope when she picks up the reins of that running martingale the huge loop hanging between his front legs tightens! Somersault waiting to happen…….

Racing TBs are encouraged to have underslung feet with super long toes, they believe it gives the horses traction in the deep footing. Personally I think it’s a crime what they do to those TBs.

It’s funny, I think, that shoeing on the track, like so many other things at the track, is about doing what’s always been done regardless of whether or not it works. That combined with superstition, leaves a lot of racehorse management in the dark ages. Look at pinfiring. The first person who has the courage to try something really different in terms of a trim may find out that it’s been time for a change for a long time.
