My parents had a stockage fence all along the North wall of our backyard. I used to put my stuffed stick horse (I am sure he was a black and white tobiano, with a very stylish red bridle!) in between two of the posts and dream that he was in my barn looking out his stall door. And my sister Joyce and I used to ride all the young, flexible trees with good spring (otherwise known as good gaits) and dream we were on TBs!
I was a horse in my backyard as early as I can remember. I had a stick horse myself — a brown horse with a black mane and a beige plastic bridle. After that, a wonderful palomino on springs, and a cowgirl outfit with two six shooters. I used to say that I was “a rootin’, tooting’ cowgirl.” I have no idea where I picked that up. Oh, to be Dale Evans and to have a Buttermilk of my own!
