Yesterday, I mentioned that there was a Chagall in the auction line up at Moran’s, but it was a work with no horse, unlike so many of his others. So I thought you might enjoy a selection of Chagall’s work that does include horses. I have nothing to say beyond that, since Chagall said, “Works of art should speak for themselves.”
Chagall’s words didn’t stop Lawrence Ferlinghetti from talking, though. You can read his poem Don’t Let That Horse here, at the Poetry Foundation.

Not a fan of either Picasso or Chagall. I like my horses with ONE head, and NO stakes sticking out of their bodies!

Love the imagination and colour of Chagall – lucky enough to see “I and the Village” at the Guggenheim and like so many famous icons (and people) surprised at how much smaller in real life. But also liked some of the more representational images you reproduced from the Moran catalogue – especially the first. If only the budget were more elastic…….!

I know what you mean, about the budget and the surprise of seeing works of art in person. I remember seeing the Pre-Raphaelites at the Tate in London and being surprised at how large some of the canvases were! I’ve never been to China, but a friend told me that those vertical mountains that look representational and which you see in so much of the art is true to life…like the light of the Renaissance paintings that is an everyday occurrence in Tuscany.
